This week in Aistear, we have been exploring the topic of The Airport. Each day the boys and girls took part in different activities relating to travel, transport and the airport. One group created an airport and a runway and even aeroplanes from Lego. Another group made passports and packed suitcases for going on holidays. The playhouse was a busy spot as it was transformed into an airport with the children acting as pilots, air hostesses, travel agents and so on. With a bit of creativity and imagination, a row of chairs became an aeroplane!! So far, the children have packed and weighed their luggage, bought and filled in tickets, checked the information board for flight arrivals and departures, built small airports and much much more!! The children’s imaginations flew higher than any aeroplane!!!

Spring has sprung in Junior Infants!! We have been very busy this month learning about all things Spring!!! Our imaginations led us to create wonderful things…we made our own farm house and vegetable garden, we learned about baby animals, we put our own twist on the story of the Three Little Pigs and we even milked cows!!

In Maths we have been working on forming sets of three. We gathered as many items as we could find and we grouped them into different sets of three and made our own number stories. We also kept our eyes peeled for the number three and we saw lots of sets of three during our Maths walk around the school.

We have also been working really hard on our reading and writing skills. On Wednesdays we all enjoy going from station to station to practice our letter formation. We make our sounds and words with Play Doh, we practice writing as many words as we can on our whiteboards, we work on our peg boards and our big writing sheets and we try to match the pictures with the correct sentences.

Room 2 had a very exciting Wednesday last week as they were having a Baking Day!!

What was on the menu? Delicious sweet, chocolaty, soft and crunchy ROCKY ROAD!!

We all had our own jobs to do – the chocolate group had to break up all of the sweet chocolate into pieces, the smarties group had to open all of the boxes and mix them into the bowl, the marshmallow group had to separate all of the soft, sticky marshmallows and the biscuit group had to crush all of the crunchy biscuits with a spoon.

Ms. Ruane carefully melted the chocolate in a big bowl and we all took turns adding in the delicious ingredients. We stirred them all together with a large wooden spoon! We placed the rocky road mixture on two trays and sprinkled the top with marshmallows! Yum!! We all wanted to eat it straight away but we had to leave it set in the fridge for about two hours. We all had fun baking and devouring our scrumptious Rocky Road biscuits!! 🙂

The boys and girls in Room 2 said their favourite part of baking was mixing all of the ingredients together, and of course eating it all up!!!

This week in Aistear, all of the boys and girls in Room 2 were exploring the topic of The Zoo. We all got into the role of the zookeeper and all of the different zoo animals like elephants, monkeys, lions and tigers.

We made zoo animals using Play Doh, we made lion and elephant face masks, we made a giant zoo box and put different animals in it and we went looking for zoo animals using our picture investigation sheet. We had great fun ticking the boxes when we spotted an animal on the “zoo wall”.

Our Maths focus this week in Junior Infants was to build towers using our Numicon pegs, boards and shapes. We challenged ourselves to make a Numicon shape using only the pegs and then build towers of the same shape. We also explored different ways of making the same number shape, for example, a tower of 3 + 2 = 5 and a tower of 1 + 4 = 5.

What a busy week of Maths – who would have thought we would be building lots of number towers?
