Leinster House History Tour

Leinster House History Tour

The three sixth classes went to Leinster House and the National History Museum on Wednesday the 24th of January. We left the school early in the morning at around 9:30, it was a long bus ride to Dublin city centre and we arrived at around 10:30. We walked into Leinster House and left our bags in lockers and we went into a large gallery. Beneath us was the Dail where the Ministers were discussing Brexit and how it would affect Ireland. We watched for a while and then we were split into groups to go around the building

We were brought into a hallway and we were told the story of the Duke of Leinster who lived in the house first. We then went into was another room, the Seanad where we listened to more discussion. We moved on and we saw an original copy of the proclamation and we were told about the men who had signed it. After that we headed out to a large room where Thomas Byrne came in to answer some questions that some of us had. He was kind and answered all the questions we had. After that we went to the steps of the National History Museum and we ate our lunch.

After we finished our lunch we split into groups and we headed into the National Museum of Ireland. We received a booklet each to fill in as we went along. The booklet told us to find certain items in the Museum. Most of them were in the same room. Some of the items we had to find and write about were a Bronze Horn, the Ardagh Chalice, an arm-shaped shrine and the Tara Brooch. The booklet asked us questions about each item and we had to examine the items. Most of the items were in the Treasury exhibition. Each one looked old and they looked like they had a lot of history. We all really enjoyed both the Leinster House and the National History Museum. It was a great day out.

Santa Run

Santa Run

On Friday 21st December, the children of St. Paul’s took part in a Santa Run on the school grounds. All children wore their school tracksuits and something festive. The children turned up very excited wearing Christmas Jumpers, Christmas Hairbands, Santa Hats and all looked very festive.

The Active Committee co-ordinated a fantastic Santa Run. They called two year groups to the yard and then paired a Senior Class child with a Junior Class child prior to taking on the run and each pair were to complete two laps of the yard together chatting, singing Christmas Carols and Songs.

The class pairing were as follows: Sixth Class with Second Class, Fifth Class with First Class and Room 26, Fourth Class with Senior Infants and Room 25 and Third Class with Junior Infants. Have a look at some of our pictures from the day thanks to Ms O’Toole.

Christmas Fair 2018

Christmas Fair 2018

As always, our wonderful Parents’ Association organised another fantastic Christmas Fair in the school on the 2nd of December. There were lots of things to do there including our selfie mirror, face painting and a visit to Santa’s Grotto. There were a range of stalls with various items to buy which included the White Elephant stall, cake stall, book stall, flower stall, sweet stall, jewelry and accessories stall and a toy stall. We ended the day with our bumper raffle with over 50 prizes! The following week the students were given the opportunity to buy tickets for the children’s raffle. There was great excitement in the lead up to the raffle and at the fair! It helped get everyone into the Christmas spirit!
Many thanks to everyone who helped make our Fair so successful. Have a look here for a full list of sponsors to the school who donated very generously to our Christmas Raffle.

Our ‘Spirit of the Final’ Hero!

Our ‘Spirit of the Final’ Hero!

Following the fantastic win  by the boys’ Gaelic Football Team in Páirc Tailteann a few weeks ago, we were delighted to hear that one of our players was chosen by the reporters of the Meath Chronicle for a special award. This award is called ‘The Spirit of the Final’ Award and Seán Twyford-our captain, was chosen. As part of this award Seán and some of teammates, James Kelly, Gerard Leavy and Oscar Glynn were invited to attend an awards ceremony at the Dunganny G.A.A. Centre today, Wednesday 12th December. The ‘Spirit of the Final’ Award was presented to each player by Meath Captain Mickey Burke. In total, 14 players were awarded this award following the finals.

A Terrific Term in Junior Infants!

A Terrific Term in Junior Infants!

September

Junior Infants had a wonderful first few weeks in school. We made lots of new friends and really enjoyed our play time topic “At School”. We worked with Lego, built schools, cut out shapes and got to play lots of different people in our school! We became little scientists when we were learning all about how our eyes work. Grandparents Day was a very special day in Junior Infants and we all loved showing our grandparents around our classroom. Well done Junior Infants!

October

We had a busy month in Room 2 as it was harvest season.  We collected leaves, brought in conkers and made some very prickly hedgehogs during art. We were introduced to the colourful characters of Numicon and we enjoyed exploring how the shapes work together to make different number stories. Yoga is something we all enjoy in Room 2. It’s a lovely way to relax after a busy week in school. We set up our own Fancy Dress Shop during play time and loved making castles and cauldrons and learning about Hallowe’en around the world. We also performed at our very first assembly – it was a spooktacular day!

November

We were very busy this month as we took on the role of doctors and nurses. We built hospitals, made healthy food, wrote cards and helped lots of patients get better. We really enjoyed a visit from a real doctor who told us all about the fantastic work she does at her surgery.  Book Week was lots of fun, especially when the very talented author, Benji Bennett came to talk and read to us. We have been doing an amazing job at learning all of our new sounds each week – we love blending them together to make new words. We also like the challenge of finding “tricky words” in our library books!

December

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly….. Our classroom has been transformed into the magical North Pole! We have set up Santa’s workshop where we are busy writing lists (and checking twice!!), making toys, wrapping gifts and delivering presents. We even built Santa’s sleigh using big lego and made Christmas puddings and glittery candles! Advent is a special time of year and we’re doing lots of things to get ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We are busy practicing for our Christmas Nativity Play and we can’t wait to perform it next week! Oh and not forgetting the special visitor that arrived in Room 2… Jingles our school elf!!

Keep an eye on our Junior Infant blog – we’ll be back with more updates soon!

From all the boys and girls in Room 2 🙂

St. Paul’s Boys win the Meath Primary School’s Division 1 Shield final!

St. Paul’s Boys win the Meath Primary School’s Division 1 Shield final!

St. Paul’s are still on a high after the fantastic achievement of our boys’ team winning the Meath Primary School’s Division 1 Shield final against Duleek. We are incredibly proud of the boys and their coaches Ms. Dennehy, Mr. Duffy and Ms. O’Reilly. Have a read below of reports on the match from our team Captain, Seán, and one of our devoted Sixth Class fans, Erin.

A CAPTAIN’S POINT OF VIEW

The team and I got onto the bus with all of sixth class. We were all so nervous on the way to Páirc Tailteann. We finally got to Páirc Tailteann, got out of the bus and made our way to the dressing room where Ms. Dennehy told us what drills we would do to warm up. When she was finished talking we all ran out onto the back pitch to warm up. We warmed up for about 20 minutes and then jogged back into the dressing rooms. Then we put our gum shields in, tied up all our laces and ran out onto the pitch. All we could hear was cheers and screaming from all of our supporters. We went out and started kicking points over the bar. Then the referee blew his whistle and we all got into position. He threw the ball up and James Kelly caught it and kicked it up to the forwards and we scored a goal. Then they scored a goal. It was back and forth for a lot of the match. In the middle of the second half we scored a lot of goals and points and established a big lead. Then they started to come back and by the end of the second half we were winning by a point. The referee blew his whistle and it was all over. St Paul`s had won the finals by a single point. I felt delighted to go up to collect shield, but a bit nervous to making my speech!                                                                                                               Written by Seán Twyford

A FAN’S POINT OF VIEW:

The Gaelic team and all of 6th class got on the bus and we drove to Páirc Tailteann in Navan. When we arrived the team got off the bus first and they went to the dressing rooms while the rest of us went up to the stands to wait. When the boys ran onto the field all of St. Paul’s cheered and screamed. Both teams spread out on the field to start the match. The referee threw the ball up and St. Paul’s got the ball. St. Paul’s scored again and again, but Duleek kept up. They scored again, but St. Paul’s wouldn’t give up. We got the ball back and the boys ran to the other goal and scored and scored again. We were in the lead. Everyone from St. Paul’s was shouted and chanting, watching the match eagerly. St. Paul’s scored more and more, but towards the end of the match Duleek got the ball, they weren’t going to give up without a fight. They scored again. We were still in the lead by two points. Duleek scored another point. Everyone from St. Paul’s watched wishing for St. Paul’s to win. Only a minute left….Duleek had the ball….They were charging towards our goal with the ball….Then the whistle blew. The match was over and we had won! We all felt overjoyed. St. Paul’s went wild. We all screamed and chanted as the boys ran across the pitch, victory theirs! The boys received the trophy as we all cheered and waved our flags and jumped with joy. We left the pitch chanting, all of us proud of St. Paul’s.                                               Written by Erin Leeson

Book Week 2018

Book Week 2018

There was great excitement in St. Paul’s last week during our annual Book Week. The children spent time browsing and buying books from the huge selection of books on display in the PE Hall. We were also very lucky to have the award winning children’s author Benji Bennett visit the children from Junior Infants to Second Class. Benji had lots of fun meeting the children, reading his books, signing autographs and he even taught the children a song from one of his books. The children (and staff!) thoroughly enjoyed Benji’s visit and some were eager to know when he’d be visiting again, before he’d even left the school! We finished the week off with the children dressing up as a character from their favourite book. As well as having lots of fun, we also raised over €5,400 which will be spent directly on books for the children’s libraries in their classrooms and for the main library. Thank you to everyone for their support during the week.

Intel Mini Scientist

Intel Mini Scientist

On November 8th, five engineers from Intel came to St Paul’s to judge the Intel Mini Scientist competition. Four classes had entered- Ms Broderick’s 4th, Mr Duffy’s 4th, Ms Tully’s 4th and Mr Harte’s 6th. Over the last couple of weeks, the children worked in groups conducting an experiment of their choosing. Plenty of research and hard work went into investigating and conducting the experiments, gathering the materials and creating a written submission for the judges to see. The judges had a tough decision to make! There were prizes for first and second place. Michael Ward, Ben Cunningham, Lucy Cameron and Amber Lane from Mr Duffy’s class came in second place with their experiment ‘The Balloon Powered Car’. Melissa Connolly, Ella Newman, Jessica Callan Smith and Deividas Matijosaitis from Ms Tully’s class came in first place with their experiment ‘Cloud in a Jar’. The first place team will now go to the Intel offices in Leixlip to compete in the next round of the competition. We wish them all the best of luck! A huge amount of work was put in to this competition by the children and their efforts were rewarded with a goodie bag and certificate from Intel. Well done to everyone involved!
